La Llotja celebrates its 240th anniversary

Last Friday, January 23rd, La Llotja presented the project 240+, an iniciative that celebrates the 240 years since the school’s establishment by bringing together a variety of activities that will take place throughout 2015.

The inaugural event, which took place in the hall of the Saint George Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Reial Acadèmia de les Belles Arts de Sant Jordi), included the participation of visual artist, Perejaume;  President of the Reial Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi, Joan Antoni Solans; Councillor for Education and the Universities of Barcelona, Gerard Ardany; Manager of the Education Consortium of Barcelona, Manel Blasco;  and the Director of La Llotja, Francesc Navarro.

Afterwards, visitors took part in Itinerari 240+, a journey from past to present-day Barcelona, making stops at ten of the school’s historical reference points and ending with a tour of the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona, accompanied by the Museum’s director Pilar Vélez.

La Llotja is the oldest school of art and design in Spain. Created by the Royal Council of Commerce in 1775, it has been attended by major artists that include Picasso, Miró, Nonell and more recently, Jaume Plensa, Oscar Tusquets, Joan Lao and Eugeni Quitllet, as well as young creators such as, Zazo & Brull, Enoc Armengol, Albert Estruch, Xavier Mañosa and Sergio Mora.
